HISTORY OF NASH MIR

Nash Mir was founded in 1998 in Luhansk in Eastern Ukraine, when a small group of courageous individuals launched an informational and educational magazine by the same name. Through this magazine, we provided the truth about homosexuals and homosexuality and publicly claimed our rights.

The Constituent Assembly of Nash Mir was held in late 1998. However at the beginning officials did not want to register our organisation and to acknowledge the rights of gays and lesbians for public association.

Certainly we didn't let ourselves be humbled by such obvious discrimination. Nash Mir was registered at the end of 1999. But this success was made possible only as the result of a determined battle by the members of the organization for their legal rights, and the steadfast attention to this issue on the part of some international human rights organisations.

OUR MISSION AND GOALS

Protect of human rights and freedoms for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender (LGBT) people in Ukraine. Increase the legal protection of LGBT people in Ukraine by fighting against discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Improve Ukrainian society’s attitudes towards homosexuality by challenging homophobia in the mass media.
Support LGBT people and their self-consciousness and pride as equal and valuable members of Ukrainian society.

ACTIVITIES OF NASH MIR

Most of our services are aimed at Ukrainian gay and lesbian community and society in general.

We publishGay.Ua newspaper, monitor gay rights and advocate it, lobby our government,provide mass-media journalist with information "on the subject", maintain contacts with LGBT activists in the regions, etc.

FUNDING AND SUPPORT

Our projects were funded by Open Society Institute, International Renaissance Foundation, Democracy Grants Program of the U.S. Embassy, Matra / COC Netherlands, Mama Cash, Astraea International Fund and individual donors. We have number of volunteer supporters, both Ukrainians and foreigners.
